the long, hard slog

at almost 10,000 ft., the san pedro volcano hike was a chore. i can't remember the last time a day hike crippled me this much. its five days after the hike and i am finally not in considerable pain walking to work, etc. the view at the top was pretty spectacular although we didn't hang out too long because it was quite windy and cold. descending back to 6,000 ft. i was feeling oh so sorry for my poor legs when i was passed by a man twice my age who was doubled over from what must have been 100lbs of wood strapped to his back. great! not only was i hurting and barely able to walk but i felt like a jerk for feeling sorry for myself. i suppose he was more acclimated to the high elevation and his center of gravity was lower than mine and he did have the advantage of enjoying the views from the mountain on a regular basis. . . i, on the other hand, was surviving on cookies and banana bread (we had ham sandwiches for lunch) and had to borrow a walking pole from our guide just to make it back down the hill. yep. i definitely had it rougher now that i think about it!

  1. Poor baby! I'm glad that you're starting to feel better now. I think you should do the same hike at the end of your stay and see if you've acclimated and buffed up. Try to contain your enthusiasm for that idea.
