road trip

last week we took a few days off from the project, piled into a touring bus and drove along crazy hair-raising mountain highways. we careened around hair-pin corners, shopped until our senses reeled at the chichicastenango market, wandered among candy-colored crypts that peppered a guatemalan graveyard hillside and jounced through small villages of coffee growers on our way down to lake atitlan. the green waters of the vast lake fill a thousand foot deep ancient volcanic crater that is surrounded by many quaint towns built on the slopes of younger volcanoes. sadly, some scientists introduced the black bass into the lake with the intent of attracting more tourists. they didn't do their homework and the bass ended up eating all of a rare species of duck that lived only on lake atitlan. the fish are also polishing off all the other native fish. i had a dish of black bass with tomato sauce. it was nothing to write home about (although i am). its a shame that the lake's delicate ecosystem was destroyed by enterprising idiots.
